Know Before You Go

If you were to ask, ‘Where in the world is the easiest place to spot snow leopards?’, Sanjiangyuan National Park would certainly be one of the best answers.

China is home to the world’s largest snow leopard habitat and the largest snow leopard population; the border region between Qinghai and Sichuan boasts the highest density of snow leopards, whilst Shiqu is an excellent spot for observing them. Here, you may witness snow leopards patrolling their territory from mountain peaks, teaching their cubs to hunt, or, in spring, seeing male and female Snow Leopards travelling together; plateau-endemic species such as  Tibetan Brown Bear, Tibetan Fox, Eurasian lynx, White-lipped Deer, Blue Sheep ,Tibetan Gazelle、Himalayan Marmot, Leopard 、Kiang and also roam the wilderness with ease. This land is truly the ‘Kingdom of the Wild’ that photographers dream of—whether you wish to embark on a snow leopard tracking expedition or explore the hidden wonders of the ‘Third Pole of the World’, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the ideal choice. Step into this realm now and discover the true Kingdom of the Wild!

Why Bestecotours?

What makes our snow leopard tour stand out?

Tracking snow leopards on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is, in itself, a truly unique nature adventure. Our tracking methods and the choice of observation sites in Shiqu maximise your chances of spotting snow leopards and other wildlife, offering photographers a truly unique experience of observing plateau wildlife.

1
We set off for the most secluded home of the snow leopard

Shiqu is a snow leopard observation site little known to foreigners, yet it is also one of the species’ core habitats. Compared to other snow leopard observation sites around the world, the population density and sighting rates here are far higher than one might imagine, and the observation conditions are far more favourable—observation distances can be maintained between tens and hundreds of metres, something that is difficult to achieve in other regions. Consequently, Shiqu has become the preferred location for Chinese photographers, who have documented the story of the ‘Kingdom of Drolma’ here; individual snow leopards such as  Medok, Lahm and Dawa all live in this region.

2
A Colourful Highland Adventure

During the peak season for wildlife activity on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, our carefully crafted, unique itinerary is designed to offer you the very best wildlife viewing experience—including the rare Tibetan brown bear and a rich variety of species endemic to the plateau.

3
Top-class Nature Guides

We provide the most experienced snow leopard guides to accompany you throughout your journey. They have an in-depth understanding of the animal behaviour in this region and can track snow leopard families, mother-and-cub pairs of Pallas‘s Ca't and Tibetan Foxes with remarkable precision. The success of a snow leopard expedition hinges on the professionalism of the guides—which is why we are committed to providing you with the very best team of guides!

4

We have carefully selected hotels for the entire itinerary; these establishments combine distinctive Tibetan character with exceptional quality, and all feature ambient oxygenation systems to help your body build up a tolerance to the low-oxygen environment. Even at hotels in the more remote snow leopard viewing areas, ambient oxygenation is an essential feature.

Itinerary

Day1
Arrival in Yushu and a trip to Xianggu Monastery to photograph wild Tibetan brown bears

We will meet in Chengdu and travel to Yushu with our tour leader, or meet at Yushu Airport.

Ancient Yushu is one of the cradles of Tibetan culture. It is home to the legend of the Tibetan hero King Gesar; ancient monasteries, fluttering prayer flags, devout prayers before mani stones, and the mysterious sky burial sites—the most authentic Tibetan culture has been preserved in Yushu. As a key stop on the ancient Silk Road, Yushu connects China, India and Nepal, leaving behind a rich cultural heritage; amongst this, the Temple of Princess Wencheng stands as a testament to the cultural exchange between the Han and Tibetan peoples.

We arrive in the evening at Xianggu Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery with a history spanning over 700 years. Inside the halls, you can listen to the monks’ evening prayers; the monks here maintain the tradition of feeding Tibetan brown bears, and we will also encounter wild Tibetan brown bears here—the largest carnivores on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

We will stay at an authentic Tibetan-style hotel in Yushu, which resembles a Tibetan museum housing a vast collection of artworks.

Day2-7
Shiqu
Tracking Snow Leopards in Shiqu and searching for other wildlife endemic to the plateau.

We set off for Shiqu at dawn, passing through Xinzhai in Yushu—home to the Jianamani Stone Scripture City, which is listed in the Guinness World Records. It comprises 3.5 billion stones inscribed with sutras, mantras and texts, stacked one by one over a period of more than 300 years; visitors standing there are awestruck by the power of faith.

Shiqu is situated in the south-east of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, at the northern end of the Hengduan Mountains, and is one of the best places to spot snow leopards. Sixty per cent of the world’s suitable snow leopard habitat is found in China, and the Hengduan Mountains rank second among the world’s seven snow leopard habitat conservation areas. The snow leopard is the apex predator in this region, which is also home to the Tibetan Brown Bear,Lynx, White-lipped Deer, Blue Sheep, , Tibetan Antelope, Kiang、Tibetan Gazelle、Himalayan Marmot, Leopard and Bearded Vulure , making it a veritable gathering place for the plateau’s wildlife.

Over the next few days, to maximise your chances of spotting snow leopards, we will rely on a professional snow leopard observation team comprising local Tibetan herder guides and our naturalist expedition leaders to guide you in tracking the snow leopards. By sharing information with the local community and maintaining radio contact to monitor their movements, we aim to maximise your chances of observing these elusive creatures.

Oxygen is thin in the high-altitude regions, and a lack of sleep at night can exacerbate altitude sickness. We provide a diffusion-type oxygen generator to disperse oxygen throughout the room, alleviating the discomfort caused by altitude sickness.

Day8
Shiqu-Yushu

Once we have finished observing the snow leopards in Shiqu, we will return to Yushu. If time permits, we can visit Yushu’s Jiegu Monastery and the Yushu Tibetan Products Market—the best places to learn about Tibetan culture.

We will transfer you to Yushu Airport or Batang Airport, where your adventure on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau will come to an end—or perhaps mark the start of your next journey!
